Racist chant at alamo heights Edison BAsket ball game?

Yall be the judge.... I for one say they know why they were chanting what they were. For those who don’t know Edison San Antonio is a primarily Hispanic (like 99% and needless to say poor) and Alamo Heights is the Highland Park of San Antonio...The schools borders are against each other and are only 3 miles apart in physical distance. It was the regional finals for the state final four tournament... http://www.ksat.com/news/defenders/R...2/-/index.html

IMO not racist in the strictest interpretation (American/Mexican are not races), but classless, and perhaps bigoted.

edit: and, yes, in my day a good excuse to whip some gringo ass.

A few stupid kids being stupid. The coach and other adults shut it down after about 5 seconds. Total non-story.

The chant lasted for about five seconds. Alamo Heights head coach Andrew Brewer silenced the students as soon as he heard them.

My son played for a mostly mexican baseball team in High School and in Select ball. Sadly, it's par for the course. Oddly, some of the worst of it actually came in Cedar Park which is mentioned at the tail end of that video.

Wow, now it is racist to chant USA!???

These kids do this after every victory! Seems to me the other teams fans should have joined in the chant. Too many victims in USA today!

Kudos to the coach but the story was that the kids were acting like bigoted $#@!s, not that the school was endorsing them doing so, so I'm not sure why you think that information changes anything.

    This isn't the first time:
Racially motivated chants are prevalent in soccer, where matchups between all-white and all-Hispanic teams arecommon.

During the 2006 Class 5A boys soccer state championship between Coppell and Brownsville Porter, Coppell fans chanted “USA! USA!” throughout the game and some fans held up a poster depicting SpeedyGonzalez.

Being bigoted /= being stupid. I'm not sure high school kids being bigoted is a necessarily a news story either but when it's apparently happening repeatedly around the state and resulting in UIL complaints, it becomes a news story.

And that's the second time you've said it was just "a few" kids, despite neither article posted specifying, or even really estimating, how many kids it was.

“Unfortunately, after the game, we had a handful of students who made a bad decision and we're very sorry it happened,” Brown said.
The school says they've identified around a dozen students who will apologize.

I went to the Dallas version of AHHS, mentioned above. We were in a district with North Mesquite, South Garland, and Wilmer Hutchins. There was never a racial incident like that. The football team buses got the Boston Public Schools in the 70s treatment at an away game at the Hutch one time, and strangely, opposing teams' fans would wave credit cards at us. We waved cash back. That's about it.

Was it 5 kids? 10? 25? Hell, Alamo Heights HS has like 1500 kids, so even 50-100 kids could be considered a handful relative to the student body.

This is stupid, racist, and not surprising. Mostly because high school kids are morons, by definition.

I went to a private high school that was NOT an athletic powerhouse. I remember we played Huntsville in football for a couple of years. As their much larger, more athletic team got off their bus, we knew we were in for a whooping. So, our primary cheer was "you got the muscle, we got the knowledge, you play football, we'll go to college."

And we were also smart enough not to hang out afterwards so they could kick our asses. Which they most certainly would have.

I repeat -- high school kids are morons. What these kids did was plainly racially motivated, and assinine. So call them on it, have their school take appropriate action, and move on.

You want racism? When my brother was playing b-ball for Klein High back in 97 & 98, Klein was playing rival Klein Forest for the district championship. Same situation, you have Klein which was all white, and Klein Forest which is all black. The game was back in forth, and both teams were playing for the state tourney. Klein went on to the final four, so this game did mean a lot, but the chants from the student section were crazy. Chants I can remember are

    "We're going to college"
"You'll be working for us one day."
    "You're on wellfare"
    "Whose your daddy."

I was in 7th grade, and I knew that was $#@!ed up. After the game, there was a 50 on 50 beat down in the parking lot. I graduated in '03, they still had cops escorting players in and out of games and guarding the parking lot after those series. That $#@! was Cray.

  • #23
    This $#@! still amazes me.

Every school I attended starting in 1949 (save one*) was integrated with blacks and latinos, so never saw any racial strife between the kids within the student body or with other schools. But my grandparents were casual bigots - used the N-bomb sometimes, and didn't like Catholics.

Saw plenty of it in the public schools nearby in Austin and when I got to UT in 1962.

*That one exception was a Catholic parochial school in St.Louis (1954-57) - there were no black or latino families in the parish, or that entire part of the city for that matter. Nonetheless, the good Sisters taught equality & love of our fellow humanity.

if this is the case, the hispanics were being racist/bigots and so were the white people. once again if this is true, both sides $#@!ing suck for their actions but as many have said HS kids being racist hiding behind a crowd is nothing new and hopefully they learn from this quickly before they get their asses beat for it.

When I went to FM Marcus, we used to chant at Lewisville "Go back, go back, go back to the 'hood" (which I think is from Wildcats). We usually followed that up with something about 'yo mamma' and about 'guess who's in jail everyday? yo pappa'

That was probably not such a good idea in retrospect.

That's EXACTLY when I was in high school. And again, I cannot emphasize enough -- compared to most everybody, we were Catholic School candyasses.

Whoah there, big fella. Those are still some solid "go-to" cheers when we play OU. I mean, taunts about the Sooner Schooner being the original mobile home/house on wheels, their state flag needing to feature a meth lab? Come on, that's my best stuff.

A few years ago we went to the Barcelona vs. Madrid soccer game in Barcelona. This game is a BFD to Spanish soccer fans.

Anyways, whenever a black Madrid player would come near our area of the pitch everyone around us would start making monkey noises. I'm taking like 10-15k people shrieking like baboons in heat.

While I can't applaud the racism, I would still like to see that.

That quote is referring both to the AHHS incident and the Cedar Park incident.

And there's also this from another article:

Don't think Cedar Park was the first team to play the race card against Lanier, either. The difference to him in this case was the increased number of fans taking part. About 15 students were making the chants.

When I was a sophomore in high school, I went to a basketball game hosted by my almost entirely white high school against one of the Aldine schools, maybe Eisenhower. Our gym had two sets of bleachers, one each on either sideline of the court (nothing behind either basket). Their crowd chanted something at us at one point-- reports vary, I couldn't make it out and was told either it was something terrifically racist about white people or something having absolutely nothing to do with race.

Either way, they chanted it for a while until one of our students decided he's had enough and stood up during a dead ball-- I say "students" to establish his age, not so much to describe him. He was of high school, not necessarily "in" high school. I honestly don't know that he could read. He was one of those "bad" kids every single other kid has heard of, and whose notice one every single kid hopes to avoid. He made Buddy Revell look like Austin Scarlett. If he's not sitting in a Huntsville cell right now, shaved head and covered in prison tattoos, he's probably at home watching reruns of "Oz" and sneering at what pussies all the convicts are. Or he's dead.

Anyway this kid stands up and mocks the opposing crowds' chant in perfect time, thusly, across the mostly-silent gym:

    "$#@! YOU..." (clap clap, clapclapclap)
    "$#@!S!" (clap clap, clapclapclap)

You hear the word "appalled" used frequently and mostly in jest. I would like to think most of our crowd was appalled, and not in jest. I know I was. Other than an incident where a kid had been called that word in my neighborhood when I was 6 and we all got a lecture from our parents, I don't think I'd ever heard the word spoken out loud, let alone shouted across a gym at 200 black people. You can't do that! I thought-- thought. I wasn't about to say anything to this guy. I had an entire life ahead of me.

There was a nervous tittering from our section and then we all politely stopped staring at the guy, as he started looking around for approval and we were all too busy with our cowardice to assist.

I can't recall a single thing coming out of that game-- I don't think there were any disciplinary actions, and it didn't make the news. All it probably really did was confirm what Eisenhower's kids already thought of us.

No it isn't. Why would the San Antonio ISD athletic director comment on an incident involving Lanier and Cedar Park?

Because Lanier is in SAISD, so they're under his jurisdiction just like Edison is, and he was the guy who also filed the complaint last year. You've gone got-damn illiterate on us, haven't you?

I frankly had no idea there was a Lanier HS in SAISD (nor does anything in that article say Lanier is in SAISD). I figured they were talking about Lanier HS in Austin.

I still think that quote was about the Alamo Heights game. If they were going to publish a year-old quote, they'd be clear that it was a quote from a year ago and wasn't about this incident.

The comments on that story are ridiculous. I'm Mexican and I'm all for the USA(except in soccer $#@! Donavan) but these kids were not chanting USA in support of the country, for someone not to realize that is close minded IMO. They knew what they were saying and what message they wanted to convey.

sounds like this chant worked to perfection.

sticks and stones may break my bones but words will $#@!ing melt me down into jelly.

Speaking of illiterate, you should learn the definition of irony.

I think what you're really trying to say is that I'm being hypocritical, but of course, even that falls completely flat since nowhere have I said these kids were representative of Alamo Heights as a whole.

Yeah, I seem to recall a story two years ago of Westlake students waving money and chanting "We Have Money" at an opposing fanbase composed of mostly poor minority students at a football game.

    Down with the Bourgeoisie!

    Racist and stupid to boot.

Westlake used to do all sorts of bull$#@! like this back in the eighties and nineties, except it was always directed at LBJ and Reagan. $#@!ing embarrassing as hell when I hung out with my AISD friends from church growing up. White or black.

    Yep.

My kids went to Reagan in the '80s.

Plenty of that going on then.

Side note - Jeff Ward played soccer for the Chaps, and he & his team were notorious for dirty play. Saw several incidents when my son got run over by his cohorts.

Ward himself got some bad newspaper pub for spitting on opponents. Buncha $#@!in' $#@!wads.
