    Olympic Swimming...SPOILERS..DO NOT READ IF YOU ARE WATCHING THE DELAY

    Thought I would start a thread separate from the Longhorn thread and the Olympics thread so as not have to hunt and peck for results.

    So, lots of heats early this AM. I had set my alarm so I could watch the stream, but I slept through it. Will definitely be up tomorrow as Ricky Berens has his prelims in the 200 free.

    First event was the 400 IM. All the headlines talk about Phelps qualifying 8th. He did. His heat was slow. Bigger story is that Laszlo Cseh, the silver medalist from 2008, did NOT qualify. So drama in the first event.

    The finals are set for this afternoon.

    Men's 400 free had more drama, the favorite from South Korea was disqualified on a false start. They appealed and he has been reinstated for the final. Paul Biedermann, the world record holder, did not qualify.

    NBC has not updated their results, but since Park finished first, the 8th man is out.

    US qualifies second behind Australia, with the Dutch in 3rd. The Dutch are the WR holders. This will be a good race.

    Medal races this afternoon are the men and women's 400 IM, the men's 400 free, and the women's 4 x 100 free relay. We have a chance at 7 medals.

    Semis are the women's 100 fly and the men's 100 breast. So far, USA doing well qualifying two swimmers to the next round in each event.

    Wow, the disqualification of Park in the 400 freestyle was the biggest load of $#@! I've ever seen. So glad it was overturned.

    No. 2007 was the last textile record, and that was Phelps at the Worlds. 2008 was the techs.

    Both Americans qualify for the finals in the 100 fly. Vollmer almost broke the WR. She tightened up and didn't take a full stroke and kicked to the wall. She has a shot of breaking it in the finals.

    Sun Yang wins the 400m and just missed the WR. Park finished second and Vanderkaay finished 3rd for the bronze.

    So far the US has 1 gold and 1 bronze.

    Why didn't we have some of our big guns like Phelps or Lotche in the 400 Free? Are they not as good in that race, or are they just saving themselves for other events?

    Well since it was same day as IM even if they were free guys they would have had to choose. That said I don't think either is a free specialist.

    Is there one premier event in swimming that has more prestige over the others ala the 100m in track? I would think that it would be 400 Free or perhaps the 400 IM.

    They are showing things on lots of NBC channels, but I think with swimming, they tape delayed all of it in the states.

    Hansen went 59.78 but still finished 6th in that semi. It was a fast semi. We will see if the second semi is fast and see if Hansen makes it through.

    Damn that was frustrating. US gets the bronze. Franklin and Hardy had us in the lead. Lia Neal and Alison Schmitt lost it. I wonder what it would have looked like with Vollmer in. Obviously it would be hard for her with the 100 fly semi, but damn. Honestly, the US lost that one.

    NBC's nightly news did a segment on him. He apparently got depressed after Beijing. Didn't do anything for 6-9 months. Apparently his training regimen hasn't been what it was leading up to 08.

    His demeanor/bearing in the interviews the last couple of days doesn't seem nearly as confident or carefree as it was 4 years ago.
