    A/C line freezing up

Noticed the temperature inside our home was not meeting up with thermostat setting and that air flow seemed low. Went outside and the lines running out of the outside A/C unit were frozen over leading into the house. Changed the filter and shut off the inside unit with the exception of the fan. Seemed to do the trick as the lines warmed back up.

Woke up the morning and the lines are frozen over again. Shut off the inside unit again but any other ideas on what's wrong and how I can fix it? Being a holiday weekend, I can't call an A/C guy and not get charged an arm and a leg.

Frozen line means low flow on low side, which usually means lack of refrigerant.

Since you have already replaced your filter and eliminated that it could be low on refrigerant, a bad blower motor or a sticking compressor contactor. Can you feel air blowing when it is not frozen? Does the outdoor unit continue to run when you shut it off at the thermostat?

Yes to feeling air blowing and it's still cold air. It just isn't blowing that hard. No to the outdoor unit continuing to run. It shuts off and the line thaws. I had to shut it off this morning because of more ice but it hasn't frozen over since then. Pretty sure the blower motor was changed out this time last year. Stuff like this always seems to happen to us on a holiday weekend. Last year, I think it went out during July 4th.

It is either low on refrigerant or the evaporator coil is dirty causing the air flow to be restricted. If you have a thermometer laying around check the return air temp and the supply air temp. You want to have 17-20 degrees differential. Less than that it is refrigerant. More than that is a dirty evap coil.

lived in one of those massive apt complexes on riverside during college, went an entire summer w/ both my inside and outside ac lines freezing up. was a f'n bitch and of course the maintenance folks didn't know $#@!/didn't care so it was never fixed. pisses me off just thinking back to it.

Listen to this guy! There is a very good chance that a clogged evaporator coil is the cause of your particular problem.

Is the evaporator coil on the inside freezing up? That happens when you're low on freon and it will impede air flow (but the air will be cool). As a temporary fix you can turn on the inside fan (without the outside condenser) and after a couple of hours the evaporator will thaw out.

When I turned the inside unit to fan the first time, there was water dripping inside the unit so I think the coil was freezing up on the inside. It hasn't frozen up since yesterday. My primary concern now is why it isn't shutting off when it hits the desired temperature. Got a call into my service guy but he won't get it till tomorrow.

Your house wouldn't happen to be 5000 feet under the sea, would it?

Be sure its thawed out when the service guy gets there or he won't be able to do much.

It's cooling just fine now. Hasn't frozen up since yesterday morning. So maybe it was just the dirty air filter. I have two longhair cats so they might be the culprits. I still may have them come out and test it.

Check and see if you're getting a steady flow of condensation from the evaporator coil. The dirty filter may have led to a clog.
