I can't shut off the water supply to the toilet

My toilet has been running constantly lately so I figured it needed a new flapper. I went to shut off the water valve coming out from the wall and it won't shut off. Water is coming out even when it's completely closed. Anybody know how to stop it?
    I'll hang up and listen.

You need a new Flux Capacitor. Any store that sells Craftsman products will have one.

If it's old, it's only one of two things:

    1. The valve died. You're going to have to shut off water to the house, remove/cut the damn thing off, and put on a new valve. The plus is you can get compression fittings (provided the pipe is copper and the right size) in most cases.
    2. Valve is fine, the handle isn't. A lot of these have screw on handles, and I did have one that came loose. You might be able to get it working again by tightening the screw in the handle (if there is one).

    +1 a

The handle is screwed on tight, so I assume I need a new valve. How hard is that to fix? I'm not the handiest man in town.

If the handle is upside down, you have to turn it to the left (looking at it from above) to tighten it. I thought I'd mention it just in case before you start spending money

Yeah, I was about to say to maybe try turning it the other way.

Well, no matter which way you turn it, water is coming out.

Call a plumber. I like to fix things myself but you don't want to deal with water damage.

do what dark said, and when you replace it, use one of those quarter turn ball valves. or don't bother replacing it for the task at hand; you don't need to shut the water off to replace a flapper.

This is money advice right here. You dont need to shut the water to replace a flapper. Also when you do replace the shut-off, get one with a quarter ball valve. They're much easier to use and they'll last forever. While you're at it, go ahead and replace all of them in your house. Once one is gone, it's likely you have more that have gone bad as well since that rubber seal deteriorates over time.

I went ahead and fixed the valve myself. Wasn't too hard.
