    Ticket for Expired Registration

I got pulled over about 10 days ago and given a ticket for my expired registration, it is about 6 months expired and the ticket says I have 20 days. Does anyone know the process for doing this or how much it may cost? Need direction so I can update my registration and get this taken care of. Thanks for the help.

You'll pay for the registration from the date of expiration - so in other words, you don't get a 12 month sticker from today, you'll get a sticker that covers the past 6 months and the next 6 months, just as if you had paid for it on time (there's no free ride!).

Then - you'll have to provide a copy of that receipt to the court in charge of your ticket and pay your fine. Done.

  5. #5
It costs like $75 to register your vehicle, give or take depending on your county. They'll probably tack on a fee because it's been so long since it expired.

You'll have to pay a $20 administrative fee to the court when you show them proof of re-registration. Make sure you get the registration done within the 20 days and pay the fee within that time, otherwise you will be on the hook for the amount of the fine, plus a $50 warrant fee, plus a $30 Omni fee (which also puts a hold on your license), plus a Failure to Appear charge.

This. I believe it will say so on the ticket.

I've never had to pay one, because I register my vehicle in a timely manner.

My DWLI clients have gotten receipts with "Penalty Paid" stamped all over them when they re-register their vehicles after they've been out of registration for months/years. I don't know how much the penalty is or when they start assessing it, but it exists.

Don't forget to take your proof of insurance to the County Tax Office. You can't re-register without it.

Thanks for the help guys, I have my proof of insurance and will be going to the County Tax office today. What other documents do I need?

  10. #10
If they don't ask, be sure to tell the person at the tax assessor that you got a ticket; there's a special notation they have to put on it for the court to waive the ticket (at least that happened when it happened to me).

  11. #11
driver's license, license plate number, proof of insurance. i did it a couple weeks ago - mine was like a year expired because i had moved and they never forwarded the stuff, and i totally never noticed. it took 10 minutes - travis county tax assessor is awesome, they are so fast. paid $70-something, but i had to pay my ticket because it had been too long.

They will charge you a fee if you have a ticket for expired registration. I think it's $10-20.

I think it covers the paperwork to dismiss the ticket or something.

Yeah, I've gotten a ticket for this before and had to pay a small late fee on top of the registration fee. Then had to pay like $20 bucks to the court for dismissal.

On the other had, contrary to what someone else posted above, it wasn't dated back to when I should have registered, but one year from the date I did it.

mine is dated one year from when i did it. also, my ticket was a whopping $160, and they wouldn't reduce it (because it was so late).

I've had to go to the county tax office to do this twice, but I've never had a ticket. The first time, I never got the paperwork in the mail and didn't know what to do so it was expired for a few months.
I went to the Travis County office on Airport. Hell, they even have a drive-thru. The girl that helped me was really nice and did not back-date the sticker.

I'll contrast that with my Dallas county experience. When I moved from Austin to Dallas the registration paperwork got lost in some moving box somewhere. The registration was expired by a few months and I went to the Records building downtown. The line sucked and the girl that helped me was less than friendly. She lectured me and couldn't believe that I didn't have a ticket. Then she gave me $#@! about my check not being from a Dallas bank. Then she gave me a sticker dating back to the original expiration. I do understand why she did it, but if she was going to back-date the sticker she could have skipped the $#@!ing lecture.

Lesson learned. That paperwork is gold.

I got a ticket from Spring Valley in Houston and it was 6 months expired. The ticket was $120 but they cut it in half because the next day I received the ticket I immediately updated my registration. I still didn't get out of the ticket. I hate you Spring Valley

HEB will only do it if it is not expired. If you haven't gotten a ticket for the inspection, get it inspected asap, if you get pulled over cops look at both stickers to see if they are expired.

I once had expired registration for 3 or 4 months. Someone at the house threw the renewal letter in the trash and it completely slipped my mind. I was really surprised that I never got pulled over for it.

I've never had an expired registration since that's the one they send to your house which makes it easy. My inspection on the other hand has been over a year expired more than once. Including now. It depends on where you get pulled over how much it costs. In Austin, I just got it inspected (and it's good for a full year from the date) took the proof of inspection to the court and it was a small fee for the ticket. Overall I came out better financially than if I had the car inspected properly in the first place.

Not sure if you were talking about my comment or not but if so I'll bite.

I keep my registration current via mail (PITA) becuase I live outside of TX but claim Tx as my legal residence. My inspection sticker on the other hand, which is what I was commened on, has been out since 07.

Probably too late - just now saw this.

Make sure you pay the penalty fee at the tax office. However, because your registration was expired for more than 60 days, the $20 dismissal fee may no longer be an option. After 60 days, it becomes discretionary. You may have to talk with the judge or prosecutor.

You can pay online now as well, but you can't if it's expired.

I have a funny story about that. My registration expired in April 2008. When I went to re-register, Dallas County told me I couldn't because I had an unpaid speeding ticket. It's not a big mystery--I've only had the one speeding ticket, but I'd paid it months before. So I go down to the municipal courthouse and they tell me that I'd already paid. No $#@!. So I can't pay any more because there's nothing to pay. But Dallas County still doesn't think I've paid.

    It's all very Kafka-esque.

It is ALWAYS discretionary to dismiss expired registration. Trans Code 502.407 says the court 'may' dismiss. I think you are thinking of expired inspection. The court SHALL dismiss expired inspection if remedied timely if it was less than 60 days expired, and MAY if more than 60 days expired.

insurance is a fine of 175-350 plus costs. PLUS a big fat driver responsibility surcharge. my advice is to request a hearing with prosecutor and beg for deferred on the no insurance, with a condition that you will maintain insurance through probation period. you don't want a no insurance conviction on your record. next time, fine could go 4 figures and they can impound your car.

my registration was december. busy time of the year to be spending more money on $#@!. i need to do this on friday after work since i'm only in the office for half the day. hope i can make it a few more days. cops are setting up "checkpoints" around dell right now.. i use quotations because they're not stopping cars at the checkpoint, just standing there and observing your windshield for expired tags. so i stay off the streets around the campus.

i'll do my inspection this weekend probably. i'm just lazy to go wait for :30 to an hour while they find nothing wrong with a 2 year old truck.

What is the point of them sitting around Dell Campus? In all reality, expired inspection and registration should be the least of their worries, and certainly not cause to set up checkpoints?

    Troof.

If this is in Austin Muni, just enter your plea of "not guilty" and get a court date. Go in with proof of your insurance that you will then have, and just ask for a deferral with the lowest possible fine. I've seen Austin Muni deferrals as low as $125.

If this is in a Travis JP, you'll also enter the NG plea and get a court date. They'll give it to you if you ask, but it won't be near as cheap.

Whatever you do, don't just pay it. The surcharge will eat you up and you'll have to get SR-22 coverage.

You are correct. I was thinking of inspection. I always flip flop MVI / MVR regs for some reason.

gagreed. but when they're told to target stickers, this is what they do. i remember they would have an undercover at busy intersections as a panhandler popping people left and right.
